WHY THE DOLOMITES
My photographic journey so far has led me to explore myself and my passions through the places I have chosen to photograph over the years—places that naturally carried stories I felt compelled to tell, stories rooted in my own life experience.
After the years spent in the Abruzzo Apennines—the land of my family’s origins and the cradle of my love for the mountains—I have now decided to turn my gaze to the Dolomites. After Abruzzo, they are the mountains I have visited most throughout my life, a relationship that began in childhood and continued during my university studies in Geology.
I feel that the time has come to return to these peaks and valleys to understand, through the lens of photography, what the Dolomites mean to me today. It is a challenge to portray a beauty that, as I have learned in recent years, lies not only in the grandeur of the summits—essential and irreplaceable as they are to any narrative of the place—but also in the small things that surround us everywhere, for those who know how to see them.
PROJECT FOCUS AND PHOTOGRAPHIC APPROACH
Over the next two years, my goal is to tell, through images, what the Dolomites represent for me today—to search for myself and for what moves me most as a geologist, a photographer, and ultimately a mountain lover, within the stage of what are, in many ways, the most beautiful mountains in the world.
At times it will be the majestic peaks and breathtaking rock faces; at others, the countless elements of the landscape that often go unnoticed yet hold deep meaning for me: trees, rocks, streams, details. In truth, a blend of that “whole” of the mountain environment that makes me feel in the right place in the world. A body of work that, by its nature, will be neither strictly documentary nor purely aesthetic, but something precisely in between.
To achieve this, I will continue with the approach that has guided me over the past eight years across the three major mountain ranges of Abruzzo and allowed me to create my first three photographic books: the use of large-format analog view cameras and black-and-white film. A slow, thoughtful, and immersive working method for studying mountain environments—one I have refined over time and that allows me to enter into deep harmony with the landscape around me, producing a limited number of images characterized by exceptional quality and a distinctive, personal aesthetic.
It is a style that runs counter to today’s image overload, standardization, and the carelessness with which photography—and mountain life itself—is often approached. This project also seeks to reclaim a more natural rhythm of observation and experience in the mountains, restoring full dignity and awareness to every photograph one chooses to make.
Ultimately, this project is a rediscovery of the beauty of the Dolomites through a deeply intimate and inward-looking narrative, composed of high-quality images that aim to suggest the importance of slowing down, reflecting, and observing the world—and, through it, oneself.

Il lavoro svolto finora, una selezione / “The work carried out so far, a brief selection (Oct 25 - May 2026)

WORKING AREA
The project officially began in October 2025, with the intention of focusing primarily on the Western Dolomites (specifically the Fassa Dolomites, including Latemar, Catinaccio, Sassolungo, Sella and Marmolada) and the Pale di San Martino, extending eastward to include Civetta and Pelmo. At least for the first year, my logistical base will be in Val di Fiemme.
The project will naturally evolve as the work progresses, so there may be changes from the original plan. This choice, however, is consistent with my intention to discover and tell my own story of the Dolomites, without attempting to create an all-encompassing documentary record, which would in any case be far too broad in scope, nor pursuing a purely aesthetic approach centred on the best-known locations. Of course, as mentioned elsewhere, the areas between the individual mountain groups will also be an integral part of the project, such as the Catena di Bocche and the Lagorai.

PROJECT STATUS UPDATED TO SEPTEMBER 2026
Work completed so far and future prospects
As of September 2026, almost a year after the project officially began, and despite the lack of structural funding, which I am still working to secure, I have nevertheless managed to produce around 70 photographs over the course of eight trips, some of which you can see on these pages. My work has spanned all four seasons and taken me through some of the best-known mountain groups: the Fassa Dolomites, Lagorai, Pale di San Martino, Pelmo and Civetta, while also extending further north to Val di Funes, with the Odle and Putia.
The project is therefore moving forward, although with adequate financial support the work could progress more quickly and consistently. I feel that I have now reached around 35–40% of my final goal, and I expect to continue at least until the end of 2027, in keeping with the original timeline, building on the collaborations already established while also seeking new ones.
